A Word From the Editor

Friends, every now and then a week comes along that quietly reminds us the gospel is still on the move. This week brought three such reminders. A U.S. mission agency announced that more than 80,000 children across Ukraine and the former Soviet Union will attend church-run Bible camps this summer, many for the first time and many in the middle of an active war zone. At the same time, thousands of Southern Baptist messengers gathered in Orlando to wrestle, pray, and chart a course for their churches in the year ahead. And on a municipal pool deck in Ohio, several Cleveland Browns players stepped into the water and declared before the world that Jesus is Lord.

Three very different scenes, yet one thread runs through them all. God is drawing people to Himself, and He is still using ordinary obedience to do it. Whether it is a camp worker kneeling beside a frightened child, a pastor framing a resolution, or a young athlete confessing Christ in front of cameras, the Lord is building His Church. We hope this week’s stories stir your heart to pray, to give thanks, and to look for the ways God is inviting you into that same work right where you live.

🏕️ Bible Camps Bring Hope to Ukraine’s War Generation

As the summer camp season gets underway, the Slavic Gospel Association, a mission agency based in Loves Park, Illinois, announced that more than 80,000 children across Ukraine and the former Soviet Union will have the chance to attend church-run Bible camps this year, many of them for the first time. Some of these camps are taking place inside an active war zone, where children have grown up knowing little but air raid sirens and explosions.

Founded in 1934, the association partners with a grassroots network of local evangelical pastors and churches spread across a vast region that spans eleven time zones. The camps gather orphans, children displaced by war, and youngsters from impoverished and even atheistic homes, offering them a week of fun, fellowship, and the chance to hear the gospel. Each camper goes home with a children’s Bible or Christian literature, and ministry leaders note that by reaching a single child, an entire struggling family can be drawn toward Christ.

The need is staggering, but so are the testimonies. Pastors report seeing more heartbreak, depression, and fear in children than ever before, yet year after year these camps lead more children to faith than almost any other outreach, with many bringing their parents to church afterward. One pastor in Ukraine’s Odessa region described a generation that has known nothing but missiles and fear. Into that darkness, the local church is carrying joy, stability, and the unshakable hope of the gospel.

⛪ Southern Baptists Gather in Orlando

More than 11,000 messengers from Southern Baptist churches gathered at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando on June 9 and 10 for the denomination’s annual meeting. Florida pastor Willy Rice was elected as the new president of the Southern Baptist Convention, and the messengers turned their attention to the work of equipping churches, sending missionaries, and speaking with one voice on the issues facing the body of Christ in America.

Drawing from more than 40 submissions, the Committee on Resolutions presented eleven statements that the messengers adopted. Among them was a strong reaffirmation of the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death, paired with a warning against efforts to rebrand assisted suicide as ordinary medical care. Other resolutions honored the 250th anniversary of the United States and the Baptist legacy of religious liberty, gave thanks for bivocational and volunteer pastors, and called churches to welcome families touched by disability so that no one is forced to choose between a loved one’s needs and the fellowship of the church.

Resolutions like these are not binding commands, yet they carry real weight. They express what a great body of believers holds dear and want to promote as the convictions that should shape their congregations. For a denomination that sends thousands of missionaries and plants churches across the nation, a week of worship, debate, and decision in Orlando is a reminder that the local church remains the center of God’s work in the world.

🏈 Browns Players Baptized at “Cleveland for Christ”

Professional athletes are usually told to build a platform and keep the spotlight on themselves. So it turned heads when several Cleveland Browns players used their platform for something else entirely. At the inaugural Cleveland for Christ gathering on June 7, players and community members met at a municipal pool in Berea, Ohio, for a day of worship music, testimony, prayer, and baptism that was free and open to the public.

Among those baptized was linebacker Carson Schwesinger, last season’s Associated Press NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, along with running back Raheim Sanders. Before going under the water, Schwesinger was asked whether he believed Christ died and rose for him and whether he was ready to make Jesus the Lord of his life. His answer was a simple yes. Reflecting on his journey, he said the most comforting thing he had learned was that God does not care how good he is at football, but cares far more about the person he is and how he points others to Christ.

Team chaplain Nobles Darby, who led the event, said he constantly encourages the players to leverage their visibility to point people to Jesus, anchoring the gathering in the call of Acts 2:38 to repent and be baptized. Evangelist Franklin Graham publicly congratulated the players, and observers noted the moment as part of a wider stirring among young men who are growing more open about faith. It was a vivid picture of what happens when believers refuse to keep the good news to themselves.

Weekly Devotion: The Word That Will Not Return Void

“So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.” — Isaiah 55:11, NKJV

Hold this week’s three stories side by side and a single picture begins to form. In one, the Word of God is carried to children who have known nothing but air raid sirens and fear. In another, the people of God gather to declare what they believe and how they will live. In the third, two young men climb out of a swimming pool soaking wet and unashamed. On the surface these scenes have little in common. Beneath the surface they are the same story, the story of a Word that goes forth and will not come back empty.

When the Lord spoke through Isaiah, He compared His Word to rain and snow that fall from heaven and do not return without watering the earth. That is exactly what we are watching. A children’s Bible placed in the hands of a child in a war zone is rain on ground scorched dry by fear. It will bear fruit in young hearts and whole families long after the camp tents come down, because the Word carries its own life. We do not have to make it powerful. We only have to carry it faithfully and trust the One who sent it.

Notice, too, that God’s Word always asks for a response. In Orlando, thousands of believers responded by putting their convictions into words, taking their stand on the value of every human life and the freedom to worship. Their resolutions will not run the churches by themselves, but they declare what a people shaped by Scripture believe to be true. The Word had gone forth among them, and it called for an answer.

On that pool deck in Ohio we see the most personal response of all. A young athlete heard the question every one of us must answer. Will you make Jesus the Lord of your life? His public yes is the kind of fruit Isaiah promised. The same Word that is reaching frightened children across the former Soviet Union was at work in one human heart, and it prospered in the thing for which God sent it.

Here is the encouragement for your week. The Word of God is not stalled, and it is not weak. It is advancing across the globe and pressing into individual lives, including yours. Perhaps the Lord is asking you to carry that Word to someone, or to respond again to what it has already spoken to you. Whatever He stirs in you, you can sow in confidence. His Word does not return void.

Father, thank You that Your Word is living and active and will not return to You empty. We praise You for every language that now carries the Scriptures, for every church that takes its stand on Your truth, and for every soul who has confessed Jesus as Lord this week. Make us faithful carriers of Your Word. Give us courage to speak it, grace to live it, and patience to trust that You will accomplish what You please through it. We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
